Pictures from the 2011 Alumni Event

Last night marked our second effort to bring all of our current UCSB and UCSB-SDSU joint doctoral students together with all of our faculty members and department alumni. I'd like to thank everyone for making the event such a fantastic success!

I personally had little time to take photographs at the event until the very end, but I know many of you took photos throughout the evening. I think we would all be particularly interested in the photos of the Skeeball showdown between Waldo Tobler, Doug Stow and several current UCSB and SDSU joint doctoral students. 2012: New York City

Before you know it, we'll need to start planning for the next alumni event. The AAG annual meeting will bounce back and forth between the East and West Coast for the next few years.

2013: Los Angeles

Should we plan for next year in New York City? Should we continue with this "every-other-year" approach and generate resources for the Los Angeles meeting in 2013?

The 2011 UCSB Department of Geography Alumni Event will be held at Gameworks from 8:00pm until close, upstairs in the private bar area and adjacent banquet room. Why the time change? A plethora of opportunities beforehand:

The Waldo Tobler Distinguished Lecture in GIScience

This session is hosted by the GISS-SG and includes the invited speaker (Richard Aspinall, The Macaulay Institute) who will deliver the Waldo Tobler Distinguished Lecture in GIScience leading to the presentation of the 2011 Robert T. Aangeenbrug GISS-SG Distinguished Career Award.

The panel consists of representatives of Dr. Marble's former students and close colleague to share his stories and highlight his contributions to GIScience and Geography.

Applications of Spatial-temporal Analysis in GIScience

The aim of the session is presentation of space-time data analysis involving an array of application.

Where ever you happen to be on Wednesday evening, make the trek from the Sheraton over to Gameworks at 8:00pm!

While we have made every effort to plan an event that welcomes alumni and their families, Gameworks cannot accommodate children under the age of 18 after 10pm. Please do come early if you will be traveling with children. We'll have special access to games for them from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. We look forward to seeing you all very soon!

AAG Field Trips

Pike Place Market Walking Fieldtrip
Wednesday, April 13, 11:00am – 1:00pm
Organizer/Leader: Bill Beyers, University of Washington
Trip Capacity: 35
Cost/person: $5

The Pike Place Market is located just six blocks west of the Seattle Convention Center. This is one of the largest farmer’s markets in the U.S., but it is much more than a farmer’s market. It is a seven acre City of Seattle Historical District with a wide variety of shops, connectors to the Seattle waterfront, and housing for high and low income people. It is the home of the original Starbuck’s coffee shop, and includes everything from the famous Gum Wall to fish merchants throwing whole salmon around. This field trip will include a walk through the market, as well as a discussion of the history of this Seattle institution.

You may even have the pleasure of a fish whizzing by your head at top speed.

If you are one of those lucky folks with an extra day on your hands, there are quite a few field trips scheduled during the week of AAG that are not to be missed!

AAG 2011 - Abstract Deadline Fast Approaching

Did you put off submitting an abstract back in October because you suspected an extension? You know you did. Well, your last chance is fast approaching. Abstracts are due on Wednesday November 10th.

Who is expecting to attend? Fill out the survey below and please leave your interests in the comments. We'd like to gauge attendance and start the planning process. A preliminary planning committee is suggesting we organize an event that would follow the Waldo Tobler Distinguished Lecture in GIScience. Stay tuned for additional details.
